Hercules Street

(Shop numbers are shown in brackets)

Exit Ashfield Station on the southern side and you find yourself directly opposite the entrance to Hercules Street. At first glance you would not be criticised for thinking you were in Shanghai.

With over twenty five percent of the population in the suburb of Ashfield being of Shanghai Chinese ancestry it is little wonder that the area has been dubbed "Little Shanghai".

Hercules Street is often closed to provide a venue for events and festivals including Chinese Cultural Festivals and Lunar New Year Festival Celebrations.

The placement of a number of bus stops in Hercules Street has encouraged the establishment of shops that provide goods for people on the run such as fast food; very popular with the large numbers of school children who commute to school from here every day.

Gulian Vaccari's Pharmacy (No 1) is very popular with both bus and train commuters seeking to grab those last minute scripts and other pharmaceutical needs.

Long termer Tim Simpson of Brough & Co Real Estate (No 28) is the man to talk to about the changing demographics and business opportunities in this part of the town.
